Bury St. Edmunds

The site of the signing of the Magna Carta had this great example of a hammer roof system in St. Mary's Church. We visited other churches in the nearby countryside, also with a variation of the hammer beam roofs.

Typically the hammer beams have angels carved into them, as can be seen on the timbers to the left and below. One particular church showed damage to the angels dating back from the reformation, unfortunately, all the angels heads had been hacked off leaving only a stub.
