Black Forrest Villages

Hansel and Gretel lived in these houses. We had little time in this village but every house did look like it was out of a fairy tale.Typically all these houses had a terra cotta colored tile roof which was almost always a 12/12 pitch. Many of the modern homes maintain the same general architectural style. |
| I especially like this shop with the corner turret. |

If Hansel and Gretel lived in these houses than they drove Mercedes, Porsches, and BMWs. This must be a typical yuppy neighborhood. |
| I was again attracted to the relief carving in the timbers surrounding this window. | |
| This is the only picture I have of the castle at the top of the page - Burg Hohenzollern. I found the tour a little boring, having to do mostly with lineages and nothing to do with wood or heavy timbers. There was a picture in the castle I found interesting. It depicted an earlier event in the history of the castle. Apparently it was besieged by a woman! She demanded the ruler (a king I think) to marry her or she would kill him. He did the only sensible thing and snuck away. I wonder if he fled to the Himalaya region, and like most men that are chickens when it comes to women, became a wood worker. Perhaps he is the one responsible for importing the famous blue oak? We can only imagine.. | |
| Another popular part of the tour - trying out every one of Mafell's very fine power tools. One day we toured the Mafell plant. Here the master carpenter (zimmerman is what they are called by trade) demonstrates the use of...something, I can't quite make it out. Anyway I own several Mafell tools and think they are the greatest. I won't let any rookie employee touch them. |
